Tips for Running Shoe Care

Today’s newsletter is written by Letty aka LettyRunz, host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel:

I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a rebel when it comes to shoe care. I've been known to skip the socks and even toss my running shoes in the washing machine for a deep clean. While these methods might raise some eyebrows among the experts, I've managed to keep my shoes in decent shape over the years.

But let's be honest, there are better ways to care for your running shoes. Here are four tips to help you get the most out of your footwear:

Rotate Your Shoes

Clean Regularly

  • Remove dirt and debris: After each run, use a soft-bristled brush or damp cloth to remove dirt, mud, or debris from the exterior of your shoes.

  • Wash the insoles: Remove and wash the insoles regularly to eliminate odor-causing bacteria. While I might toss my entire shoe in the washer, it's generally recommended to stick to washing the insoles.

Store Properly

  • Avoid direct sunlight: Store your shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can degrade the materials.

  • Stuff with newspaper: To maintain the shape of your shoes, stuff them with newspaper or shoe trees when storing them.

Check for Wear and Tear

  • Inspect the soles: Regularly check the soles for excessive wear, uneven wear patterns, or signs of separation.

  • Replace worn-out shoes: If your shoes show significant wear, it's time to invest in a new pair to prevent injuries.

By following these tips, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your running shoes and ensure they continue to provide you with reliable performance. So, while I might be a bit unconventional in my shoe care habits, I encourage you to take a more traditional approach to keep your kicks in top condition.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
