The Mental Side of Racing

Today’s newsletter is written by Letty. She is the host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel:

Racing success isn’t just about miles logged or workouts completed—it’s also about mastering the mental aspects that carry you through the toughest moments. Confidence, determination, mental toughness, and the ability to prioritize your goals are essential traits for any runner. These attributes don’t come naturally to most of us—they’re cultivated over time through intentional effort. Let’s dive deeper into each of these areas and explore how you can strengthen your mental game to reach your potential on race day.

By the way, if you want to hear an entire episode about this topic, check out our podcast from this week, where we dive into these strategies and share real-life stories.

Confidence

Confidence is the cornerstone of racing success. It allows you to approach the start line with a calm belief in your abilities. Building confidence starts in training, where every successful workout and long run serves as a small victory. One of the best ways to cultivate confidence is to consistently do things you’re good at. Whether it’s nailing a speed session or finishing a long run strong, those moments reinforce your capability.

For me, running long always gives me that extra boost. Those wins in training are what I hold onto when nerves creep in before a race.

Visualization is another powerful tool. Picture yourself running strong and finishing the race with a smile. Replay this mental image during your runs and in the days leading up to the race. Additionally, keep a log of your training achievements to remind yourself of all you’ve accomplished—this can be a great resource for boosting confidence when doubt creeps in.

Drive and Determination

Drive and determination fuel the journey from the first training run to crossing the finish line. These qualities often stem from having a clear purpose behind your running. Ask yourself: Why do I run? For me, staying connected to the "why"—like celebrating progress or enjoying the community of runners—always helps me push through tough days.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little reminder. You can write it down, put it on your fridge, or even set it as your phone background. A little visual nudge can go a long way in keeping you focused.

Mental Toughness

Racing inevitably involves discomfort—whether it’s the physical strain of the final miles or the mental challenge of pushing past doubt. Mental toughness is what enables you to stay focused and persevere when things get hard.

One way to build this skill is through controlled adversity in training. For me, those long runs in the humid Florida heat have been priceless. I may grumble while I’m out there, but come race day, I can tell myself, “You ran through that heat and humidity —you’ve got this!”

Again, visualizing helps here too: Visualizing tough moments during your race and imagining yourself overcoming them is another powerful technique. Prepare mentally for the hills, the fatigue, or the doubt, and practice finding strength.

Prioritizing Racing Goals

Amidst life’s many distractions, keeping your racing goals in focus can be a challenge. Prioritizing these goals means aligning your daily choices with your larger aspirations. Write them down—whether they’re about finishing, achieving a specific time, or just being the best version of yourself at this moment. Some prefer writing A, B, and C goals.

Also remember, no goal is too small if it matters to you. Give it your attention, your time, and your effort. For me, reminding myself that I’m doing this for me—not anyone else—helps me stay grounded and motivated.

Putting It All Together

The mental side of racing is what often separates good performances from great ones. Confidence lets you trust in your preparation, drive and determination keep you committed, mental toughness pushes you through the hard moments, and prioritizing your goals ensures that your training aligns with your aspirations.
