Determination

10 years ago Usain Bolt tweeted “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in determination.”

Determination is simply defined as firmness of purpose. When we are firm with our purpose, we tend to push through challenges and tolerate feelings of discomfort. Our actions become intentional and focused, which allows impossible things to become possible. When we have enough determination, it is possible to lose in the short term, but impossible to lose in the long term.

3 ways to use determination this week.

1. Build habits: Being determined means seeing something through to the end, which will require going over speed bumps and navigating obstacles. Instead of attempting to accomplish everything on day 1, we are better off building habits that prepare ourselves to endure the hard times. Not only do habits guide us through the challenges, they improve the quality of our lives. As Tony Robbins discusses, the quality of our life is the quality of our habitual emotions.

2. Don’t give up: We often surprise ourselves by the progress we make if we simply do not give up. While we may think that the most talented or skilled individual will win, often the person who wins is the one that does not give up. Before throwing in the towel, consider your purpose then keep going. As the famous quote from Vince Lombardi goes, “Winners never quit, and quitters never win.”

3. Think for yourself: Something that is impossible for others, may be possible for you. Before taking other’s thoughts as your own, think for yourself. “Is what they are saying really true?” If it is then take it to heart. If it is not, then ignore it so that it does not mess with your internal psychology.

It is remarkable how much long-term advantage people like us have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.
