Run News Roundup for Mar. 7

Pickleball increases adult activity levels, homecooked meals are valuable and proving the benefits of a positive mentality for runners.

Americans Are More Active Thanks to Pickleball

The pickleball craze isn’t going away and that’s a good thing. A recent study by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) shared that pickleball participation in the United States grew 51.8% between 2022 and 2023. It’s been the fastest-growing sport in America for three consecutive years with participation more than tripling since 2021.

In addition to pickleball’s explosive growth, there’s been an increase in overall activity, which means people are getting healthier. The number of people that have participated in an activity grew by 5 million in 2023 marking 10 straight years that activity participation levels have increased. The increase in activity of Americans is not surprising since U.S. citizens are valuing and pursuing active lifestyles post-pandemic.

As Sportico points out in coverage of the study (which includes terrific graphs), nearly as many Americans (13.6 million) played pickleball last year as they did baseball (16.7 million) and outdoor soccer (14.1 million). Individual sport activity participation, which jumped dramatically during the pandemic, continue to grow.

Nutrition Tradition That All Households Should Try

Sometimes the simplest weekly rituals are best. As Tanner Garrity recently shared - his Salmon Monday tradition ensures that he gets at least One Wholesome Dinner per Week, is special for his relationship and conveys a handful of benefits:

  • It guarantees one healthy dinner a week.

  • It makes Monday — usually his moodiest day of the week — a day to look forward to.

  • It challenges him and his girlfriend to divvy up chores and complete a task.

  • It provides an extra 2,000 steps by requiring a walk to the fishmonger.

  • It inspires research and bouts of creativity.

How to implement One Wholesome Dinner Per Week?

Don’t overthink it. The point is the importance of sanctifying just one home-cooked dinner a week. Try to make it a healthy one, too but that won’t be too challenging since home-cooked meals are inherently healthier than takeout or pre-packaged fare. Assuming you’re gathering fresh ingredients and following a recipe, you’re already in the win column. Here’s a helpful rule of thumb: eat colorfully.

How To Prove Benefits of Sports Psychology?

The turning point for Alex Hutchinson was Eliud Kipchoge’s smile. In the late miles of his 2017 sub-two-hour marathon attempt, Kipchoge kept flashing a grin. It was a deliberate tactic to help work through the pain as Kipchoge’s reputation as the Yoda of endurance was just taking off. Then sports psychologists in Northern Ireland published a study in which they measured a 2 percent drop in energy consumption from runners who smiled. Kipchoge was right—and by extension, Alex reasoned, sports psychology was a real and measurable thing.

Since then Alex has written enthusiastic articles about sports-psych topics like mindfulness, self-talk, and mental focus, touting the emerging evidence that they really can enhance athletic performance. In parallel, he’s grown skeptical of conventional sports science—ice baths, compression socks and ketone drinks, and so on.

A Future Apple Ring

New filings and reports speculate that Apple might be moving into the hydration-tracking and smart ring markets as the tech giant continues to push into the health and wellness space. The hydration-tracking feature could continue to improve on the already-beloved Apple Watch, and the smart ring could disrupt the growing space currently dominated by Oura.

Apple recently filed a patent for its Apple Watches that would be non-invasive and could measure perspiration, skin temperature and help consumers optimize hydration. If successfully implemented, it could displace skin patch offerings that focus on hydration measurement, like Nix and Flowbio. Apple is also developing a noninvasive glucose-monitoring solution and working on a much-anticipated AI health coach.

Strava for Dogs Now Adds Dog Step Counts and Fitness Rankings

Strava is partnering with Fi dog collars to gamify dog walks by displaying a dog's fitness data in the Strava app. The new feature will appear in the Strava activity summary, showing a graphic of your dog's step count and rank compared to other dogs of the same breed.

The Fi collar tracks your dog's location with the main purpose to ensure that you can find your dog at all times. It’s secondary purpose is to track daily step count during walks. Now the Strava x Fi integration will let the smart collar automatically upload walk data to the app.
