Are run clubs blurring community and commerce?

In July we shared a story highlighting how run clubs are the new dating apps. At the time, Lunge Run Club was hyped as the fastest growing running club for singles. It was founded by Lunge, a dating app that prioritizes connecting singles instead of endlessly swiping.

Now, Valentina Botero is writing that she considers Lunge to be an example of where the lines between community and commerce blur since the club is not just a space for runners, but also a brand motivated to profit. According to Valentina, what started as community-focused gatherings are being transformed into business opportunities.

10,000 steps a day fuels the movement economy

New research has valued 10,000 daily steps by an individual at $2,281 annually. The findings originate from studies facilitated by Sweat Economy, a move-to-earn platform rewarding users for physical activity.

Oleg Fomenko, Sweat Economy’s co-founder and research program organizer, believes the research matches his ambition to turn the value of physical activity into a trillion-dollar economy.

The research suggest that companies receive an economic value of $4.38 per employee per day for being active, which bodes well for corporate wellness platforms.
