Fake Strava runs in Indonesia

Indonesians are bragging about runs they have not completed by hiring Strava Jockeys to log runs for them. Strava Jockeys have simple rules: the faster the run, the higher their rate. One Strava Jockey charges 50 cents per kilometer and an additional $1.75 for every kilometer at a pace of 4:00/km or faster. He maxes out at 10 kilometer runs and refers the client to another jockey whose expertise is in long distances.

Indonesia’s minimum monthly wage is equivalent to $129 USD, so with demand at the above rates, Strava jockeys can earn more than double the monthly minimum wage by completing a daily 5k in under 20 minutes.

Run clubs are the new dating apps

Dating has gotten harder, the apps have gotten tired, and single people want something new, so the millennial and Gen Z generations are bringing back singles events.

As people around the world turn to hobbies and run clubs to meet others with common interests, dating apps are recreating themselves. One dating app, Thursday, makes it easier to facilitate singles-only events. The app has features similar to other dating apps, but it only works on Thursday to encourage users to meet the same day. Additionally the Company hosts in-person, singles-only events like happy hours, run clubs and a ski trip to France.

In New York, single people are looking to ditch the apps and meet IRL (in real life). The latest fad is meeting at a running club, and the Lunge Run Club is getting hyped as the fastest growing running club for singles. It was founded by Lunge, a dating app that prioritizes connecting singles instead of endlessly swiping.

Eat spicy foods in the heat

Living in a hot climate means more than just staying hydrated. It also means making your diet heat friendly. Hot temperatures influence diets in warmer parts of the world as demonstrated by the spiciest foods coming from the hottest places on the planet.

There’s a biological reason for this. When you dig into a spicy dish your heart beats faster, you breathe harder and you start to perspire. Not just your mouth but your whole body feels like it is on fire. And if you’re eating this dish and it’s above 90°F outside, you’re really feeling the heat.

Sweating is the body’s physiological response to being too hot. Humans sole means of cooling is to sweat since the perspiration cools the skin. If the body’s core temperature starts climbing—which it does if you’re exposed to extreme heat for too long—sweating cools off the skin in an attempt to bring that core temperature down. Eating spicy foods jumpstarts that process, which is why they’re popular in hotter regions of the world.

According to Dr. William Li, people who eat more spicy foods every day have a reduced risk of all-cause mortality. Also according to Li, cultures in warm parts of the world have known for thousands of years that spicy foods trigger a hard-wired system that opens pores and releases heat from the body. While you feel temporarily hotter, eating spicy foods ultimately cools you down.

How cannabis can benefit runners

The relationship between cannabis and physical exercise has been studied over the past decade, as more countries have legalized the recreational drug. Runners enjoy cannabis for a variety of reasons, and while there’s no evidence that it is performance-enhancing, it can enhance recovery and make running more fun.

Recovery: Widely regarded for its therapeutic properties, CBD (cannabidiol) is the hemp-derived version of the drug, which doesn’t have mind-altering effects. For runners, topical CBD creams or balms help promote recovery after a hard workout by reducing inflammation and soreness. Anecdotal evidence from athletes suggests that CBD can provide a gentle full-body buzz to promote relaxation.

Make running fun: Contrary to stereotypes that cannabis makes you sleepy, many runners find that the drug promotes mental clarity and provide positive psychological benefits during a run. Marijuana can have a focusing effect, too, making it easier to get through workouts without distractions.

In summary, for someone running a fast 5k or marathon PR, cannabis doesn’t make sense, but for an ultrarunner trying to get through the grind of a double-digit training run, it might.
