Reduce Distractions by Running

Sabrina Little’s essay ponders how the singular focus required by running takes us away from life’s distractions.

Our lives are not structured to support sustained reflection (we wear headphones, we are alerted of news stories and we answer emails all day). We confuse productivity for meaningful work and fill our time with tasks. Then we conclude our days with Netflix — very fun, yet not great for thinking. It is easy to make it through a day without critical reflection and there are true consequences to living in a world like this. So we might be extra grateful for the space running affords us. Here are a reasons from Sabrina for why the attentional space that running offers is valuable.

  1. It Gives Us Space to Wonder

  2. It Offers Practice for Staying in Place

  3. It Is Restful

U.S. Tumbles in World Happiness Report

The U.S. dropped eight spots to 23rd in the annual World Happiness Report. Studies find that Americans feel glum about issues ranging from loneliness to the country's political leadership. Gallup, whose data powers the World Happiness Report, attributes the drop to Americans under 30 feeling worse about their lives. Young people today report feeling less support from friends and family, more stress and less confident in government. The report also finds that older people are now happier than young people in North America — the opposite of many other regions.

5 Golden Rules for Elite Nutrition on the Road

Emily Hawgood is always running—and not just the world’s most challenging ultramarathons (she recently won the Salmon Falls 50K in Pilot Hill, California). She’s also dashing through an airport to catch the next flight and zipping about the kitchen. She recently shared how she remains a high-performing ultrarunners through her hectic travel schedule.

1. Don’t Stress About Time Zones—Just Eat

Emily tries not to stress much about travel because the more she worries about it, the more it causes the body to freak out. She typically will get on the plane and quickly change her watch and phone to the destination’s time zone to begin operating at that time of day. For example, if it is 6pm where Emily is landing, she will begin getting ready to end her day.

2. Come Prepared or Learn to Ask For Help

Emily has had trouble finding gluten-free options in some countries, like Japan when she was traveling there alone in 2019 and didn’t know the language. Since then, she makes sure to know how to ask for gluten-free options in the language of the country she’s visiting.

3. Drink Tons of Water

Emily always chooses an aisle seat on a plane so she’s not afraid to drink a ton of water.

4. You Don’t Always Need a Plan

Emily tries to avoid strict plans to keep her stress levels and blood pressure down. Flights get delayed. Travel snafus pop up. She’s ready to be flexible.

5. Don’t Take Shortcuts

Emily does not take shortcuts on the quality of her food when traveling. Airport food can be expensive but Emily prefers to eat a real meal knowing that it will cost more. That is better than having a less expensive bar or snack.

Run Hard and Party Harder

From iconic start line energy to fire finisher sets with Diplo himself, Diplo’s reimagined 5K series and afterparty are dropping in San Francisco on September 8th and Seattle on September 14th. Diplo has over 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

From Diplo: “Over the past few years, I’ve doubled down on all things health and wellness, and running has been a big part of that. I’m excited to finally get to combine two of my favorite things in one event: fitness and DJing. A 5K may be intimidating to some but Diplo’s Run Club is for everyone and meant to be a good time for all – both seasoned runners or anyone just starting their running journey. I’m looking forward to running and partying with everyone at the inaugural events in SF and Seattle this fall!”
