Colder weather is coming. Running in the winter can be super beneficial. It not only allows you to keep on track with your training plans as you prepare for spring races, it also gives your confidence an extra boost! "Hi, I just ran 4 miles in 30 degree temperature, I can do hard things!"
According to Coach Dan with the Run Experience, the most difficult part of cold weather running is the motivation. So here is a playlist with 3 songs from Rocky that you can keep handy!
If you're looking for more practical guidance, the former Outside magazine editor Megan Michelson has three considerations that she considers unique to running in cold weather.
Warming up has increased importance in the colder weather. Megan recommends doing dynamic movements like arm windmills, jumping jacks, squats or anything to get your blood flowing and loosen your joints, which can feel stiff in the cold. When warming up you should start running at a conversational pace where you can breathe and talk comfortably while running.
Megan warns that your initial cold weather runs may be slower than you are used to. So don't plan on setting any personal records on your first few cold weather runs!
Although you may not feel like it, still consider doing a slow jog or walk to cool down for 5 minutes. Even though your body is warm, you may still feel cold due to the weather. Also remember that your body may not register thirst the same way that it does in heat. So don't forget to hydrate!
