6 Tips to Stay Motivated to Run
Today’s newsletter is written by Letty, host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel:
Running is one of the most rewarding activities, but let’s be honest: even the most dedicated runners occasionally struggle with motivation. Maybe it’s the weather, a busy schedule, or just feeling unmotivated. When those days come, it’s important to have strategies to get back on track. Here are 6 tips to help you stay motivated and rediscover your love for running, no matter what life throws your way.
1. Set Clear, Meaningful Goals
A well-defined goal gives your running purpose and direction. It could be training for your first marathon, hitting a personal record in your next 5K, or simply running three times a week for fitness. Write down your goals and revisit them regularly. Break them into smaller milestones to celebrate along the way—every step forward is progress. Tracking your journey, whether through a journal or a running app, keeps you focused and motivated.
2. Keep It Interesting
Running the same route or sticking to the same routine can make running feel stale. Mix things up to keep your runs exciting. Try a new trail, explore a different neighborhood, or experiment with different types of runs like tempo workouts, interval training, or hill repeats. Not only does variety keep you engaged, but it also helps you become a more well-rounded and stronger runner.
3. Reconnect with Your 'Why'
Why did you start running? Was it for fitness, mental clarity, a sense of achievement, or something else? Remind yourself of the deeper reasons behind your running journey. When the motivation to get out the door feels elusive, think about how running enhances your life—whether it’s the post-run endorphins, the health benefits, or the joy of being outdoors. Keep a mental or physical reminder of your “why” to revisit on tough days.
4. Reward Yourself
Consistency deserves to be celebrated! Give yourself something to look forward to as a reward for sticking with your runs. It could be something small, like treating yourself to a favorite snack after a tough workout, or something bigger, like a new pair of running shoes after hitting a mileage goal. These little incentives can give you that extra nudge to stay consistent and keep you excited about your progress.
5. Build a Running Community
Running doesn’t have to be a solo endeavor. Connecting with others who share your passion can make a world of difference. Join a local running group, sign up for virtual challenges, or find a running buddy to keep you accountable. Sharing your struggles, celebrating milestones, and simply enjoying the camaraderie can transform running into something you look forward to. Online communities and social media groups are also great places to share your journey and draw inspiration from others.
6. Embrace the Tough Days
Let’s face it—not every run will feel amazing. Some days, your legs will feel heavy, your mind will resist, and the last thing you’ll want to do is lace up your shoes. On those days, focus on just starting. Commit to running for 10 minutes and see how you feel. Often, the hardest part is getting out the door, and once you start moving, momentum takes over. And if the run still feels hard, remind yourself that every tough run builds mental and physical resilience.
Keep Moving Forward
Running is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Motivation will ebb and flow, but what matters is how you respond. By setting meaningful goals, introducing variety, and leaning on your community, you’ll keep the fire for running alive. Remember, the tough days are part of the journey, and every step forward counts.
