What Runners Really Want: Key Takeaways from the 2024 Global Runner Survey
Today’s newsletter is written by Letty, the host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel:
The 2024 Global Runner Survey by Running USA sheds light on the attitudes and behaviors of runners and walkers who participated in road races over the past year. With over 7,400 responses—94% from the United States—the report highlights what drives participation, offering insights for race directors, brands, and other stakeholders.
This year’s participants, primarily recreational runners, included only 20% identifying as “serious competitive runners,” a term that can mean anything from racing others to striving for personal goals. For a deeper dive, tune in to the latest episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, where we interview Jay Holder, Executive Director of Running USA. Jay shares his perspective on the survey results and what they mean for the future of the sport.
Here are 3 takeaways from this year’s survey:
1. Location as a destination
The number one factor influencing race selection? Location—but not just for convenience. Survey respondents emphasized the appeal of destination events. While proximity can matter for some, the opportunity to travel and turn a race into a mini-vacation or a memorable getaway is a significant motivator for many runners. Race directors who market their events as unique experiences—highlighting iconic landmarks, scenic courses, or vibrant host cities—tap into this desire effectively. Pairing a great race with a great destination draws more participants, offering them a reason to lace up their shoes and book a trip. Successful races don’t just focus on logistics; they create an atmosphere of excitement and adventure that keeps runners coming back year after year.
2. Runners invest in quality experiences
Despite the rising costs of hosting races, runners are willing to pay for exceptional experiences. Participants, many of whom come from upper-middle-class households, are not looking for the cheapest option—they are looking for the best. High-quality events that include well-organized logistics, smooth registration processes, unique finisher swag, and exciting post-race celebrations are worth the price for these participants. For race organizers, this means investing in areas that elevate the runner’s experience. From improved course support to post-race festivities, ensuring that every detail contributes to an enjoyable and seamless event can lead to strong word-of-mouth, repeat participation, and a reputation for excellence.
3. Communication is everything
Frequent, timely, and high-quality communication from race organizers is another priority for runners. Whether it’s pre-race emails with clear instructions, reminders about event changes, or detailed course information, communication reduces uncertainty and creates a better experience. The survey revealed that runners appreciate when organizers anticipate their needs and address potential concerns before they even arise. Beyond the basics, creative communication—like behind-the-scenes updates, inspiring stories from participants, or tips for race day—can also help foster a connection between the event and its runners. In a world where clear and quick communication is expected, race organizers who prioritize this aspect can create trust and loyalty, making their events a go-to choice year after year.
