Weekly Endurance Briefing: Sydney Record Breakers, Jenny Simpson Retires + Nike Structure Plus 🏃♂️

RACE COVERAGE & RESULTS
The 2026 TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS delivered an unforgettable day in the Harbour City as 400,000 spectators lined the streets to cheer on a record field of 36,296 runners. History was rewritten at the front of the pack, with Ethiopia's Addisu Gobena setting the fastest marathon time on Australian soil (2:04:42) in a race where five men broke the sub-2:05 barrier, while Peres Jepchirchir captured the women's title in a dominant 2:18:31.
The day also featured unprecedented major milestones—including Daniel Romanchuck returning to Sydney after his accident in 2025 to set the course record alongside a standout performance by Manuela Schär.
World record holder Sabastian Sawe has officially withdrawn from next month's Berlin Marathon due to injury, missing his chance to defend his title on the German capital's famously fast course. Coming off his historic sub-two-hour run in London this past April, Sawe's sudden exit leaves a massive void at the front of the men's field—shifting global attention toward Tigst Assefa's high-stakes pursuit of the women's world record.
Yngvild Kaspersen engineered a stunning second-half comeback to make history as a two-time women's champion at the UTMB CCC, overcoming a late thunderstorm-induced course change to surge past Toni McCann and Miao Yao in Chamonix. In the men's division, Italy's Cristian Minoggio controlled the final 40 kilometers to claim a dominant victory in 10:21:48, erasing the memory of his 2025 heartbreak.
BREAKING NEWS
In a profound update from the running world, three-time Olympian and 2011 1,500m World Champion Jenny Simpson has announced she will permanently step away from running following a near-fatal cardiac arrest this past June. Simpson, 39, collapsed while pacing young athletes at an event in Raleigh, North Carolina. Thanks to immediate bystander CPR and rapid AED intervention on the track, her life was saved. Doctors have since diagnosed her with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC)—a rare genetic heart condition where intense physical exertion can trigger lethal arrhythmias.
While her competitive and recreational running days have come to a close, Simpson remains deeply connected to the sport through her leadership role at Fleet Feet and expressed immense gratitude for her recovery: "That chapter has ended. Thankfully, my story hasn't."

The Carbohydrate Bottleneck: Why modern science points to 90–120 grams of dual-source carbs per hour and why waiting until you're hungry is already too late.
