Men's Elite Race Recap:

The men's elite race at the TCS New York City Marathon delivered an unforgettable spectacle as Abdi Nageeye (NED) stormed to victory in 2:07:39. The Somali-born Belgian and European marathon record-holder displayed resilience and competitive spirit, putting in a strong performance. Nageeye's consistent pace kept him in the mix as he navigated through the Bronx and down Fifth Avenue, earning him a solid finish in this highly competitive field.

Behind Nageeye, Evans Chebet (KEN) and Albert Korir (KEN) engaged in an intense battle for podium positions. Chebet, the 2022 New York City Marathon winner and two-time Boston Marathon champion, unleashed his trademark kick heading into Central Park, determined to close the gap and add a fourth Abbott World Marathon Majors title to his career. Korir, the 2021 New York champion, showcased the experience that propelled him to victory before but ultimately finished just behind Chebet in a commendable effort.

On the American front, Conner Mantz emerged as the top U.S. finisher, marking a breakthrough performance in 2:09:00. Among them, Conner Mantz, already a two-time U.S. Olympic Trials champion and recent Paris Olympic top finisher, was a fan favorite with his family cheering from the sidelines. Clayton Young, Mantz’s former college teammate, ran a steady race alongside his compatriots, finishing in 2:09:21. This year’s race marked a notable performance for American distance running.

Women's Elite Race Recap:

The women's race at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon delivered a thrilling showdown among an elite lineup of runners with the potential to break the longstanding course record of 2:22:31. Hellen Obiri, the defending champion and the first woman in 34 years to win both the Boston and New York City Marathons in the same year, was the favorite. The three-time Olympic medalist and Kenyan record-holder in the 3,000 meters had dominated across distances, including recent titles in the Boston Marathon, United Airlines NYC Half, and multiple World Championships. Her recent move to Colorado to train with coach Dathan Ritzenhein had solidified her transition from track to marathon success.

Among her strongest competitors was Edna Kiplagat, the resilient "Queen of Persistence," with an illustrious marathon career including wins in Boston, New York, and World Championships golds. Despite being in her forties, Kiplagat continued to contend with the top runners, including her fourth-place finish in New York in 2022. American hopefuls Dakotah Popehn, fresh off an inspiring 12th-place finish at the Paris Olympics and a third-place performance at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, and Jessica McClain, running her first marathon since her breakout fourth-place finish at the U.S. Trials, rounded out the field.

Ultimately, it was a Kenyan sweep of the podium, with Sheila Chepkirui crossing the line first in 2:24:35, followed by Hellen Obiri in 2:24:49, and Vivian Cheruiyot in 2:25:21. This historic finish marked a memorable moment in marathon history. First American was Sara Vaughn (USA) coming in at 2:26:56.
