Buddy the Elf breaks a world record, Pilates vs. Yoga, and why runners should jump rope.

Buddy The Elf Breaks World Record

Last week, Jason Homorody broke the world record for the fastest half marathon time while dressed as a movie character. Homorody dressed as Buddy the Elf and crossed the finish line of the Warm Up Columbus Half Marathon at 1:25:44, besting the previous record of 1:30:44 by 5 minutes.

Pilates vs. Yoga: which should runners choose?

According to Amber Sayer there are pros and cons to each. The key difference between Yoga and Pilates is that Yoga has spiritual and religious ties, whereas Pilates was designed to be a functional form of exercise.

While both Pilates and Yoga focus on core strength, breathing, the mind-body connection and centering, Yoga has a broader scope of defined principles beyond physical movement, integrating other factors like diet and lifestyle behaviors. Pilates focuses purely on the physical practice of the workout.

Five core principles of Yoga:

  1. Proper Exercise (Asanas)

  2. Proper Breathing (Pranayama)

  3. Proper Relaxation (Savasana)

  4. Proper Diet (Vegetarian)

  5. Positive Mindset and Meditation (Vedanta and Dhyana)

Six core principles of Pilates:

  1. Centering

  2. Concentration

  3. Control

  4. Precision

  5. Breathing

  6. Flow

Runners Convey Identity Through Apparel

Runners are increasingly viewing apparel as an essential way to convey personal identity. What does this mean for the future of the running industry? According to trailrunner, small independent brands like Tracksmith, Janji, and Ciele are thriving as they lead the market shift away from performance-oriented gear and towards casual gear.

Smaller brands with distinctive products and direct-to-consumer models resonate with consumers seeking authenticity and individual expression by offering unique styles and community engagement. The thriving independent brands have further benefited from the surge in running during the COVID-19 pandemic, which fueled the growth of athleisure (for example, lululemon’s stock price tripled over the last 5 years). The Athleisure market, or hybrid casual-athletic wear, is valued around $350 billion annually and expected to grow to over $650 billion in the next 10 years.

Words To Run By 🏃‍♀️🏃🏽‍♂️

I want to be the person that is the first person there and the last person to leave. That's who I want to be, because I think the road to success is through commitment, and through the strength to drive through that commitment when it gets hard. And it is going to get hard and you're going to want to quit sometimes, but it'll be colored by who you are, and more who you want to be.
