Endangered and delicious fruit

While grocery stores sell large and attractive fruit, small and ugly fruit that grows on heirloom plants tends to be soft, ripe and delicious. As a result, boutique orchards are increasingly growing and harvesting heirloom peaches, apples and apricots.

More varieties of fruit previously existed than what is now in grocery stores. Take the apple as an example. Varieties like Fuji and Granny Smith are popular because they are easily grown and hardy enough to transport, but there were once thousands of cultivated apple varieties, which is now down to the hundreds.

Boston Marathon accepts 24,069 qualifiers who ran 6:51 or faster than qualifying standard

24,069 qualifiers who were 6 minutes, 51 seconds (6:51) or faster than the qualifying time for their age group and gender have been accepted into the 2025 Boston Marathon. A race record of 36,393 qualifier applications were received during registration week (September 9th-13th). The Boston Marathon field size is set at 30,000 official entrants.

“The sport of marathoning is reaching record levels from both a participation and speed standpoint. Unfortunately, we’re unable to accept all athletes into the field, though we do want to recognize, thank, and applaud all whose goal was to be part of the 2025 event.“ said Jack Fleming, President and CEO of the B.A.A.

Do electrolyte supplements really hydrate?

Water is essential to our bodily functions. We need it to carry nutrients to our cells and keep our brains sharp. Since we constantly lose water through sweating, peeing, and breathing, we must constantly hydrate. Water is absorbed and retained better when it is paired with minerals like sodium, potassium, and chloride, called electrolytes.

It’s important to replenish electrolytes during exercise. Commercials show our favorite pro athletes boosting their electrolytes with sports drinks, but do we actually need these supplements? Electrolytes are key to hydration, mainly because they enhance fluid retention. More electrolytes trigger more efficient fluid uptake from the gut. Sodium is the most important electrolyte for staying hydrated.

How many electrolytes do we need? The normal range for sodium in the body is 135 to 145 mg per liter of blood. It’s rare for people to drop below the minimum, because electrolytes are so plentiful in food and because sweat contains relatively few electrolytes during exercise. But it’s also challenging to get too many electrolytes.

Who really needs electrolytes? Electrolyte supplements are useful for athletes of all skill levels and people working in hot temperatures, such as construction workers, delivery drivers, landscapers, and farm laborers. Workers exposed to hot environments for over two hours should start replacing electrolytes since if they just drink water, “they’re essentially diluting the blood.” Guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends having fluids every 15-20 minutes while prioritizing electrolytes, which can be done with meals and snacks in addition to sports drinks.

For example, Conor repeatedly removed statements like “widely regarded as one of the best trail runners ever” from competitor pages while adding a similar statement to Camille’s page that described her to be “widely regarded as one of the greatest ultramarathon runners of all time.”
