The health benefits of pain
Moderate amounts of pain from activities like running, weightlifting, ice baths and eating spicy peppers can trigger mental and physical health benefits.
Pain starts with stress, so when humans get stressed, the oxygen in our cells gets disrupted to help us overcome the challenge. If the stress is from a toxic source like cigarette smoke, heavy metals, or chronic emotional strain, it weakens the cells and cause proteins to misfold, eventually leading to disease. If however, the stress is more controlled and does not cause excessive fatigue, the stress becomes beneficial.
Research links moderates amounts of stress to the prevention of cancer, dementia, and heart disease due to its ability to detoxify and repair cells throughout the body, which boosts health and resilience.
In summary: pain → stress → cell detox → boosted resiliency
What to eat after a run
The sooner you eat after a run (although it might not be easy), the faster your body gets the nutrients needed to repair itself. Eating high-glycemic (fast-digesting) after a race helps to replenish muscle glycogen stores that have been burned during the race. Glycogen is the storage form of glucose, which gets burned during a race so not eating after a race will cheat your muscles and slow down recovery.
Here are several foods to consider eating that help to replenish glycogen stores following a run:
Bananas
Raisins
Granola bars
Pita bread
Chicken breast
A large salad
Olives
Avocado
Brown rice or quinoa
5 products to build strength at home

Strava’s effects on mental health
Strava combines health tracking with social media for more than 125 million users, but do the fitness positives outweigh the mental health negatives?
Recent studies found that Strava users are motivated by the app’s ability to connect them with others who exercise, but also get performance anxiety from the app.
Will NYC produce 2024’s top marathoner?
As the year’s final Abbott World Marathon Major (WMM), this weekend’s New York City Marathon will be 2024’s last showcase of many of the world’s top marathon runners. If you’re running - good luck! Check out The Rundown’s complete guide to the NYC marathon here.
Unlike other track and field events, Olympic gold is not the clear top prize in the marathon. Winning two majors in a calendar year is a bigger payday and likely means that a runner has beaten tougher competition. When it comes to determining the #1 marathon runner in the world, there’s no set formula, but evaluation would likely include the size of the races won, the finishing times and the competition in the field.
Nobody this year has won multiple WMM (Abbott considers the Olympics part of the major series), but 2 entrants have the potential to change that this weekend. They also happen to be the defending NYC champions: Hellen Obiri and Tamirat Tola. Since winning last year’s NYC marathon, Hellen won in Boston and Tamirat won the Olympic gold in Paris.
