Nancy’s nutrition insights from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics convention

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the nation's largest group of food and nutrition professionals. Sports nutrition expert Nancy Clark attended their recent annual convention in Minneapolis. Here is a a sampling of topics:

  • U.S. teens have low health eating score: According to the Healthy Eating Index, U.S. teenagers score 49/100. The main culprits are a high intake of sweetened beverages and sweet baked goods. Consider promoting water, bagels with peanut butter, and bean burritos as alternative low cost options.

  • Many runners overeat protein: Expert guidance suggests runners should eat 0.5 to 0.9 grams of protein per pound of body weight each day. Consider vegan and insect-based protein as meatless options that are environmentally friendly.

  • Female athletes often underate carbs: Consider adding more carbs like grains, fruits, and veggies to your diet.

  • Digestive issues are common in athletes due to stress or eating disorders: Consider adding digestive enzymes or consulting with a dietitian. The sparkling drink company wildwonder has lots of resources on gut wellness.

  • Female athletes struggle with body image: Female athletes believe society expects them to look feminine and maintain an “ideal body”. A survey of normal-weight female athletes reported almost half had experienced weight discrimination. Focusing on strength over thinness and avoiding social media can increase confidence and improve well-being for female athletes.

Thank you Nancy Clark for your work to help us improve our nutrition to better optimize our athletic performance and mental health!

Peloton partners with Costco for the holidays

The purchase comes with a 48-month extended warranty. The announcement comes as Peloton still searches for a permanent CEO following Barry McCarthy’s departure in May.

A marathon love story in Detroit

On Sunday, a husband and wife won the Detroit Free Press marathon then passionately kissed at the finish line.

For the first time in its 47 year history, a married couple won the Detroit Free Press Marathon with husband Andrew and wife Sydney finishing with respective times of 2:17:46 (5:16 per mile pace) and 2:42:45 (6:13 per mile pace).

The Husband: 30-year-old Andrew Bowman is the cross-country head coach at Rochester Christian University and had previously won the 2024 Pittsburgh Marathon in May with a time of 2:15:52. Andrew qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials for the first time this year.

The Wife: 33-year-old Sydney Devore quit her job as a teacher in 2017 to run professionally. Sydney won the 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon and the 2022 Glass City Marathon. Last year, Sydney was the 3rd American woman to finish the New York City Marathon with a time of 2:36:01. Sydney has qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials twice (2020 and 2024).

Hotshot firefighters run ultramarathons

Hotshot firefighters are known for their toughness. Some are putting that grit to use by running ultra marathons. One example is 30-year-old Sarah Fondaw, a member of the Lewis & Clark Hotshots in Montana who ran her first ultramarathon after her first fire season to continue to push her mental and physical limits.

Similar to fighting wildfires, ultra races offer Sarah an opportunity to challenge herself and get a feeling of satisfaction from conquering a challenge. Running long distances has helped wildland firefighters maintain a purpose beyond fire season, which can help them transition back to daily life. Many firefighters credit ultra races for their help in bringing structure and community to their life during the quiet winter months when their are no fires.

Distance running is increasingly becoming common for those fighting wildfires, so if you see a hotshot at an upcoming race, thank them for their selfless work that helps keep us safe.
