The history of the turkey trot

In 1896, 6 men lined up to run Buffalo Y.M.C.A.’s first-annual turkey trot. Maybe they wanted to burn calories before a big Thanksgiving feast or maybe they just wanted an opportunity to get out of the house. Regardless, 4 of the 6 men finished the 8-kilometer race to start what is now the oldest consecutively-run footrace in the world.

MTV to Peloton: Kristin McGee’s wellness journey

Kristin McGee, founder of Peloton’s yoga programming, discovered and started teaching yoga in New York City at health clubs like Equinox and Crunch during the 1990s. She learned pilates after being frequently asked to sub for pilates classes and soon loved both yoga and pilates, believing them to both be fascinating mind-body workouts that complement each other beautifully.

Kristin’s career took off when she became the face of MTV Yoga (here is a video from 2002), which led to her writing for fitness magazines, leading sessions on the Home Shopping Network and working with celebrity clients like Steve Martin, Tina Fey, and Emilia Clarke.

Kristin McGee

In 2018, Kristin reached out to Robin Arzón to ask if Peloton would consider including yoga in their workout programs, which soon led to Kristin launching Peloton’s yoga platform, which combined her love of teaching with her love for being on camera.

In the future, Kristin would like to create a fitness platform that offers personalized programs based on each person’s needs. She is a believer in mindful movement and that the future of fitness lies in customization. According to Kristin, too much emphasis is places on on blanket statements like ‘Everyone should lift weights’ or ‘Everyone should eat keto,’. Instead, fitness and nutrition should be tailored to the individual.
