Jimmy Carter ran (part of) a 10K when he was president
On September 15th in 1979, President Jimmy Carter was one of 750 starters at the Catoctin Mountain Park Run. Carter arrived with his personal physician, secret service and military. He had just flown in from Alabama and Florida, where he had been viewing the damage from a hurricane.
The 10K course had a gentle uphill of 1 mile then a downhill of 2 miles before going back up hill to the finish. 55-years old at the time, Jimmy Carter finished at mile 4 instead of the race’s full 6.2 miles. Carter really struggled to climb back up the mountain, nearly collapsing as he ran out of steam.
After nearly collapsing, Carter and his physician went back to the nearby Camp David. The president quickly recovered before returning to congratulate the winners at the finishers ceremony an hour later. The race had 703 finishers.

Almost half of adults are trying a new diet in 2025
About 46% of U.S. adults have a new diet as part of their New Year resolution.
When asked which diets folks plan to try, the results show:
40% eat fewer calories.
26% try a low-carb diet like keto, Atkins or South Beach.
7% eat a plant-based diet.
Research has shown that a plant-based or vegan diet is effective for losing weight and keeping it off. Counting calories can be time consuming and create a negative relationship with food while plant-based diets can help lose weight without restricting or counting calories. This is simply due to plants being naturally lower in calorie density and higher in fiber, which promotes a feeling of fullness.
Fitness & wellness trends for 2025
As consumers embrace new ways of living, moving and being healthy, the global wellness market is projected to grow to nearly $9 trillion by 2028.
To get started, here are several of the top fitness and wellness trends to watch in 2025:
Longevity & recovery become big: The longevity movement took off in 2024 as medical professionals, influencers and everyday wellness enthusiasts became enthralled with the idea that scientific breakthroughs and lifestyle choices can help people live better, for longer.
Fitness wearables evolve into healthcare companions: Fitness wearables are more popular than ever. Wearables have come a long way from the days of simply tracking steps and calories burned. As tech advances, wearable makers are envisioning a future where smartwatches, and smart rings become your personal health companion.
Strength training (and probably pilates) are here to stay: Strength training has increased in popularity during 2024. Appreciated for its anti-aging, functional and metabolism-boosting benefits, strength training is everywhere, from gyms to TikTok. Even Peloton has embraced it, releasing a dedicated strength training app to attract more fitness fans. Strength training isn’t just lifting heavy weights. Pilates’ surge in popularity is thanks to increasing awareness about the benefits of strength training and buoyed by women who have embraced strength training post-pandemic.
