Eating bacon and hot dogs harms the brain
A new study published in Neurology details that processed red meats (like bacon, deli meats, and hot dogs) harm the brain. In the study, people who ate more processed red meat had a 14% higher risk of developing dementia than those who consumed minimal amounts.
The study analyzed data from more than 130,000 health professionals and concluded that people eating more processed red meat had a higher risk of dementia, a greater risk of cognitive decline, and worse cognitive function.
The 14% higher risk of dementia was linked to people who ate 0.75-oz. or more of processed red meat daily. 0.75-oz of red meat is equivalent to two slices of bacon, 1.5 slices of bologna, or a single hot dog.
The take-away: reducing red meat intake could provide cognitive health benefits.
Wellness brands shift to Instagram amid TikTok turmoil
Uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future has fitness influencers and wellness brands looking to Instagram for stability and opportunity. TikTok’s nearly 1.6 billion monthly users include many fitness influencers and wellness brands that depend on the app to grow.
TikTok shut down briefly Sunday night before a new executive order paused the ban for 75 days.
What would a TikTok ban mean for fitness businesses? Tik Tok has expanded the reach and driven results for many wellness brands. Specifically, it has driven membership sign-ups and product purchases. The platform’s audience is highly engaged and ready to take action, making it ideal for sales-driven strategies. This compares to platforms like Instagram, which have the reputation as being better suited for fostering community and deeper engagement.

Record breaking hill workout
Last weekend Josh Hoey set a new American record for the indoor 1,000m race. Josh ran the 1,000m in 2:14.48, which broke the American record by nearly 2 seconds and places Josh #2 in the world.
Several weeks before Josh’s record breaking performance, his brother and him visited a slope in Flagstaff, Arizona where they completed the below hill workout.
The workout: 15 x 300m hills
7,000 feet elevation
3 sets of 5×300m (2 minute rest)
5-7 minute rest between sets
*3rd rep of of each set is all out
This is a hard workout.
The workout is intended to be difficult but smooth. Begin slow and pick up speed later – the fatigue will settle in quickly as the workout progresses. The 3rd rep of each set should be the fastest. Aim for what feels like an all-out effort.
Josh completed the easier reps in around 50 seconds while running the all-out reps in 43 to 45 seconds.
New American half marathon record
Last Sunday, U.S. Olympian Conner Mantz ran the Houston Half Marathon in 59:17 to set a new American record. Conner’s time was 26 seconds faster than the previous American half marathon record of 59:43, which Ryan Hall set 18 years back.
Conner set a new American record, but still finished 2nd overall to Ethiopia’s Addisu Gobena, who finished with the same time of 59:17.
After the race, Conner shared that he was grateful for his pacers, his competitors and his coach.
