Banned food additives in Europe are still on U.S. shelves
The U.S. treats chemicals in food as safe until proven harmful. The regulatory approach has been highlighted in recent debates compared to Europe, which has banned several additives that are still on U.S shelves.
One example is titanium dioxide, used to enhance food appearance, which was is banned by the European Food Safety Authority in 2022 due to potential DNA damage. It remains legal in the U.S., where it is in sweets like Skittles and Hostess cupcakes.
Another example is potassium bromate, banned in the U.K., Canada, Brazil and Argentina due to its linkage to cancer and gut problems. It remains an ingredient in U.S. breads and pizzas.
Companies defend their use of these additives, citing FDA approval, while consumer advocacy groups call for stricter regulations.

Should races skip the swag?
Races are rethinking the traditional model of automatically handing out T-shirts and medals with more events now offering “no swag” or “bare-bones” entry options that let runners skip the extras, sometimes for a lower registration fee.
Green bibs: Several marathons have leaned into a Green Bib program that allows runners to forgo the usual finisher gear. While it’s primarily a sustainability initiative, some races offering similar options do pass savings along to runners. At large events, race swag is a major expense—between sourcing, printing and shipping—so skipping it can mean a lower-cost bib.
Many trail races already do it: Many trail races have been proponents of minimalist racing for quite some time. The races keep entry costs low by cutting unnecessary perks with many events skipping medals and excess swag to focus on the experience. Trail runners have largely embraced this no-frills approach for with more runners prioritizing affordability and sustainability.
Health benefits from ice baths are context-specific
Analyzing data from 11 studies with 3,177 participants, researchers from the University of South Australia found that cold-water immersion offers health benefits that are time-dependent and context-specific.
The researchers found that cold-water immersion helps inflammation and reduces stress. Regular cold showers led to 29% fewer sick days at work. Sleep quality improvements emerged as another benefit primarily in male participants with research showing better sleep scores among those who practiced cold-water immersion.
King Charles surprises 5k runners
King Charles surprised participants of the recent Move Against Cancer's 5K with an appearance. A staff member at the Move Against Cancer initiative had written to the King inviting him to their 5k, but nobody knew the King was coming until his arrival shocked the group.
The 5K event works to combine the physical benefits of exercise with the psychological events of a peer support group. It hopes to support people living with and beyond cancer including family, friends and health care professionals.
King Charles was diagnosed with cancer last February and began treatment soon afterwards.
