Super bowl ads were loaded with sodium

Watching football isn’t just a sedentary activity, it encourages eating unhealthy foods. A recent report from JAMA Network shared that food advertised during NFL games contain high levels of sodium, calories and fat content.

In the study, researchers found that 10% of NFL commercials feature food products. In those food products, sodium content ranged from 220 mg to 1,872 mg (10% to 80% of the recommended daily limit). Eating too much salt is linked to high blood pressure, heart failure and stroke. Blood pressure is directly related to stroke, cardiovascular disease -- even to death from cardiovascular disease and heart failure.

Unhealthy food products are often advertised next to people who are smiling during a memorable occasions with loved ones. In reality, if you want to have many more memorable occasions with loved ones, its’ better to avoid the food products being advertised during football games.

Exercise offsets the negative impact of sitting

Most desk jobs require sitting for 8+ hours a day, so 65+ million U.S. adults spend 8 or more hours sitting every day. This can lead to health issues like back pain, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and premature death.

A 2020 study found that 30 to 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily could help offset the potential health issues that arise from so much sitting. Physical activity can offset the detrimental association between sedentary time and risk for death.

A 2023 study found that people who exercise for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly (22 minutes daily) did not have an increased risk of death regardless of how long they sat during the day.

Put simply, it’s better to add physical activity to your day than to reduce all sedentary behavior.

Kendrick Lamar runs to understand

Kendrick Lamar performed the halftime show at last weekend’s super bowl. His respiratory endurance (and height) was on full display while he danced and rapped for 13 minutes. Kendrick’s consistent training of running (with burpees and pushups) made it possible.

In an interview from last October, Kendrick revealed a strong link between his spirituality and his passion for running.

“My early-morning practice is that I have to run,” Kendrick said. “When I started running, that’s where I started to understand. There was this threshold of pain in the spirituality for me. I remember my shins was aching and I was like, I got one mile to go. And next thing [I know], I’m three miles in, four miles in. I wake up and do that shit every day.”

The rapper said his runs allow him to process his inner thoughts.

Peloton seeks more community with new teams feature

Peloton is building on Teams, a new community feature launched last September. It began as a way for members to create small groups of friends and family. Since launch, 70,000 teams have been created.

Peloton is now expanding the functionality of Teams, allowing users to host up to 50,000 members. Users can explore teams based on popularity, profile tags, featured community teams or by searching for a team name or description.

The update introduces new engagement opportunities, enabling users to celebrate team members’ milestones, leave comments and react with emojis. Additionally, team administrators have enhanced admin controls and can now set leaderboard goals, such as target distances for running, walking, cycling or rowing.

A recent Peloton survey reported that nearly 70% of respondents found online communities or Teams with friends and family to be “relevant to achieving their fitness goals.” For many, Teams serve as a motivating tool to stay accountable while competing in a fun environment.
