2024 ClassPass fitness report

Fitness reservations on ClassPass increased 51% from 2023. Here are several takeaways from their annual report.

34% of Americans sleep more in the winter

If you feel like you sleep more in the winter, you are not alone. A survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine shows that 34% of Americans report sleeping more in the winter.

Why? Our bodies take cues from the sun for when to be awake. The decrease in sunlight during the winter causes an increase in melatonin, which encourages sleep. Even more, the colder temperatures increase our metabolism, which furthers our need to sleep more in winter.

50 marathons in 50 states

Last Sunday, Wyatt Moss crossed the finish line at the Honolulu Marathon to complete his 50th marathon, each one in a different U.S. state. The 22-year-old Wyatt finished the Honolulu Marathon in 5:30:15 (a 12:36 per mile pace).

During his 50 marathons, Wyatt would frequently post videos on Instagram, to motivate his 100,000 followers to “live the greatest day ever, every day.”

Wyatt’s marathon journey included running in costumes. He was a hot dog at the 2024 Philadelphia Marathon, Santa Claus at the 2024 Tulsa Marathon, a cowboy at the 2024 Des Moines Marathon and wore a full tuxedo at the 2024 NYC Marathon.

To make the 50 marathons in 50 states work, Wyatt would fly to multiple race destinations on weekends, then return to his home in Atlanta during the week to finance his marathon travels through his table-making business. To get to starting lines, Wyatt would sleep in airports, public parks and rental cars.

This is Wyatt’s 4th year of a wild challenge.

In 2021, he visited a Chipotle restaurant in almost every U.S. state.
In 2022, he visited 100 American colleges in 100 days.
In 2023, he attempted biking across the U.S. on a penny farthing, starting in L.A. before cutting the trip short in Nashville after he went over the handlebars and broke his arm.

Is Gout Gout a young Usain?

After 16-year-old Gout Gout ran the 100 meters in 10.04 seconds and the 200 meters in 20.04 seconds at last weekend’s Australian All Schools Championships, Usain Bolt commented that “He looks like a young me.”

Gout Gout’s time broke national records in Australia, a country where no man in history has broken 10 seconds in the 100 meters.

Gout Gout is a 6-foot athlete from Queensland, Australia, whose family is from South Sudan. It would be premature to fully compare Gout to Usain, whose legacy includes world record times of 9.58 seconds in the 100 meters and 19.19 seconds record for 200 meters.

World champion cyclist pleads guilty in car incident involving Olympian wife’s death

Earlier this week, Australian Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis plead guilty to a charge related to the death of his wife (and fellow Olympian) Melissa Hoskins.

In the guilty plea, Rohan admitted creating likelihood of harm, which carries a maximum sentence of 7 years. The charge means that Rohan’s actions were reckless, but he is not criminally responsible for his wife’s death. Rohan, reportedly had no intention to harm his wife.

The charges stem from an incident on December 30, 2023, when Rohan was driving a car that struck Melissa, who later died from her injuries.

Melissa competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Rohan helped Team Australia receive a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and a bronze in 2020. Rohan also is a two-time world champion in the road time trial who retired from cycling in 2023.

The couple were engaged in 2017 and married in 2018. They have two children.
