Running “icks” according to Gen Z

If you’re new to the running community or think you might be out of the loop with younger runners, here are “icks” according to the new generation.

One-stepping: Constantly running one step ahead of your running partner regardless of the pace. Why run ahead of them?

Easy runs in super shoes: Carbon-plated super shoes make you feel fast, but it isn’t good for your feet to run in such a stiff shoe all the time. Running in flexible shoes that are less bouncy will build strength and stability in your feet and legs between speedier workouts. Save the $350 shoes for the times when you care about running fast.

Noise-cancelling headphones: If your headphones block out external noise, please don’t run in public. Fellow runners should be able to inform you that they are passing so that you can make room. Not to mention, it’s dangerous to be unaware of your surroundings.

3/4-length tights: These are out of style. Seven-eighths-length tights are the new, acceptable length.

Not moving over on the sidewalk: If you don’t move to the right side of the path or get into a single-file line when you see a runner coming towards you, that is a faux pas.

Wearing shorts over tights: This restricts your hip movement and makes you look amateur. Embrace the leggings to look and run like a pro.

Jogging on the spot at red lights: This creates poor biomechanics. Here is more detail on why jogging in place at red lights is frowned upon.

Spamming Strava: Strava groupies don’t want to see your warmup, workout and cooldown as separate uploads, let alone your individual workout reps. Uploading weight workouts or casual walks to Strava is a good way to lose kudos.

Running with your phone in your hand: Improve run form and prevent hand cramping by getting an arm band or a running belt for your phone.

Is mustard good running fuel?

The condiment used to spice up hot dogs and bologna sandwiches is being repurposed by runners. Many athletes swear by it as a way to stave off cramps and provide a quick energy boost. In 2022, a viral video featured former Canadian hockey player Mark Letestu sucking down a mustard packet on the bench.

The theory for why mustard combats muscle cramps is that it stimulates nerve receptors in the mouth, esophagus and stomach, signaling the brain to stop cramping. This is the same ingredient in pickle juice, another popular anti-cramping remedy. Additionally, mustard’s turmeric content, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, helps ease muscle soreness after a run.

The impact of alcohol’s color on hangovers

Does the color of alcohol affect hangovers?

In general, the percent-ABV and number of drinks consumed are the two factors that predict hangovers. A lesser-known factor that also impacts hangovers is called congeners.

Congeners get created during the alcohol fermentation process. The amount that get created depend on the carbohydrate used for fermentation, such as grapes for wine, or grains for beer. The distillation process also influences the quantity of congeners in a beverage.

As a general rule, the lighter the drink, the lower the congener level. This means that clear alcoholic beverages like vodka, light rum, gin, sake and white wine are low in congeners, while amber or dark tequila, cognac and whiskey are high in congeners. Bourbon whiskey has more congeners compared to most other alcoholic drinks.

Alcoholic beverages high in congeners are more likely to give intense hangovers. A published study found that those who drank bourbon had more severe hangovers compared to a group that drank vodka.

The takeaway: Choose lighter-colored alcoholic beverages like light beer, vodka, light rum, gin, sake and white wine to have less intense hangovers.
