Boutique Fitness Studios for Baby Boomers

In a recent Trends Report, Cyan Zhong and Jedi Council hypothesize that the increase in silver sneakers is creating a gold rush for fitness clubs. Regardless of advancements to longevity tech, the most potent anti-aging drug will still be exercise.

Exercise is could also be a cure for loneliness in seniors since 38% of baby boomers believe that regular physical exercise is an essential way to connect with peers. Despite the current size of the $112 billion fitness club market (with boutique studios like SoulCycle, Barry’s and Orangetheory bringing in annual revenue in the 9-10 figures) - the boutique fitness clubs currently don’t appeal to older folks with people ages 59-77 being much less likely than younger generations to join group exercise classes and boutique fitness studios.

Adventure tourism is another growing market for seniors who now consider their retirement more of a rewirement. The recent accomplishments of Yuichiro Miura climbing Mount Everest at age 80 and William Shatner going to space at age 90 demonstrate that people of all ages can handle adventurous activities.

Walking is a Good Start for Exercise

Walking is a great way to stay active and get from point A to point B. But is it good exercise? It provides decent aerobic activity and works large muscle groups carrying bodyweight, but it can’t do everything. Federal physical-activity guidelines recommend:

  1. 150+ minutes of aerobic physical activity a week

  2. 2 sessions of muscle-strengthening activities per week

Walking can fulfill the first aerobic category if intensity is increased to a reasonable standard. In addition to increasing pace, several ways to push the activity into the moderate aerobic exercise range include walking on an incline or different terrain and adding a weight vest .

Walking can’t fulfill the second requirement since the strengthening that it provides is limited to bodyweight and it does not incorporate several major muscle groups. Strength training comes with many health benefits, like lowering the risk of injury, improving mobility and increasing flexibility.

Details of the Disastrous Willy Wonka Experience

In February, Willy’s Chocolate Experience debuted in Glasgow, Scotland following the release of the new film Wonka (ranked 7/10 on IMDB). The event has since been canceled with many attendees demanding refunds and sharing that:

  • the entire experience took two minutes

  • plastic cups of lemonade lined a bare folding table

  • a figure dressed in black with a silver mask emerged from behind a mirror and made kids cry

  • the space resembled a warehouse with decorations and full-length mirrors leaning against haphazardly hung curtains

Actor and comedian Paul Connell was hired to portray Willy Wonka at the event and shared that he was given a 15-page monologue script of “AI-generated gibberish” and told to give children one jelly bean and a quarter cup of supermarket-brand lemonade.

The man behind the experience was the House of Illuminati director Billy Coull, who apologized for the sheer and utter disappointment while blaming technical issues for the event’s shortcomings.

Disney Has Intoxicating Run Culture

30 years after its first event, runDisney has become one of the largest race organizations in the world. More than 170,000 runners participate in runDisney events every year. Despite registration fees that can exceed $400, the events typically sell out in minutes.

Jamie Marcella, 42, is a runDisney fanatic who spends roughly $10,000 every year to travel and participate in three Disney race weekends. Why?

  • Disney creates unique experiences with beloved characters: the events deliver extreme nostalgia and emotion that combine the magic of Disney characters with running.

  • runDisney builds a community: those who sign up for runDisney races don’t just love running, they love Disney and the events bring them together.

  • The experience provides memories NOT the best chance at a PR: the it is a inclusive, fun, sporty community of Disney runners - not just an opportunity to run fast.

How Olympic Athletes Sleep

In theory, we’re supposed to sleep a lot since it boosts performance, protects against injury, accelerates recovery, improves free-throw shooting, and all sorts of other wonderful things. Roger Federer used to get 12 hours of sleep per night. But how important is sleep? Is good sleep a “nice to have” or “need to have” to maximize your athleticism?

A new study dives into the sleep habits of Olympic athletes ahead of the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. The results suggests that a surprising number of athletes aren’t sleeping as much as they’d like with roughly 40 percent of US Olympic athletes having poor sleep based on their PSQI (Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index) scores. The scores take into account factors like duration of sleep, the time it takes to fall asleep, how often sleep is disturbed and whether sleep medications are required. Similar rates of poor sleep were found in recent studies of Dutch and Australian Olympic athletes.

So does poor sleep mean that new levels of athletic possibilities await if only Olympic athletes could better master sleep habits? Or is sleep just not that important since Olympians can sleep poorly and still perform at peak levels? It’s tough to know, but next time you’re frustrated by an inability to fall asleep, remember that you’re just like 40% of Olympians.
