The importance of foot strength when running

Most runners overlook foot strength—until something starts to hurt. Your feet absorb up to 3 times your body weight while running.

We don’t often strengthen our feet, yet we rely on them heavily. Over time, that imbalance can cause the small muscles in your feet to break down under the load.

The best way to prevent this? Strength training with exercises like calf raises, banded ankle inversions and toe flexion/doming exercises.

Targeting the feet and calves can build resilience. While stronger feet might not make you faster, they will help you avoid injuries and stay consistent with your training.

3 of the most common running-related foot injuries are plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and metatarsalgia.
