World’s oldest marathoner dies in road accident

Fauja Singh, the legendary Sikh marathoner, was killed on Monday after being struck by a vehicle in Punjab, India. He was 114.

Fauja began running in 2000, at age 89, following the death of his wife and a battle with depression. “From a tragedy has come a lot of success and happiness,” he had said. That year, he made his marathon debut in London, before running 8 more marathons throughout his career.

His fastest performance came in 2003 when he ran the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 5 hours 40 minutes. In 2011, he made history by becoming the first 100-year-old (and oldest person ever), to complete a marathon when he finished the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 8 hours 11 minutes.
