Obsession

We all have passions. Things that we like to do.

Then we have obsessions. Things that we crave so deeply that we focus on them in an all-consuming way. When we are obsessed, nothing else matters.

Often, the word obsession is used negatively. There are certainly negative things that we can be obsessed with. Drugs and alcohol are 2 examples.

But obsession can also be positive. Harnessed properly, obsession is a super power that gives us courage, focus and creativity. Obsessing over the right things gives us an understanding that every minute is a precious opportunity to make progress towards our goals.

As Jelly Roll shares “If you get the fire to spark about anything. Whether it is music, HVAC, real estate, entrepreneurship. You can obsess over it, and it can work.”

When we truly want something, whether it is in running or life, lets obsess over achieving it. If we obsess to the point that others think we are strange, it could just mean that we are on our own unique path to greatness.

3 ways to consider obsession.

1. What would I bet the farm on? It is easy to want something. Especially if there is no cost to it. Unfortunately, there is always a cost (whether it is obvious or hidden). Instead of considering what we want, by considering what we would trade everything for, we learn about our obsessions, which provides purposeful goals while productively focusing our time, attention and actions.

2. Let’s relentlessly pursue our goals: Setting goals is easy. To achieve them, talent, luck and a relentless pursuit are often required. Relentlessly pursuing our goals allows us to maintain our focus, composure and positivity regardless of what happens. By relentlessly pursuing our dreams, we unlock our true potential. Even better, relentlessly pursuing our goals tends to attract others who would like to obsessively pursue the goals with us.

3. The journey is not always glamourous: While filtered social media posts and romanticized stories are often what we see and hear, the reality tends to be quite the opposite. The journey is not always glamorous, but losing is important to our success.
