The Boston Marathon’s New Qualifying Times: What They Mean and the World of Marathons Beyond
Today’s newsletter is written by Letty aka LettyRunz. She is the host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel.
The Boston Marathon, known as the holy grail of marathons for many distance runners, has once again adjusted its qualifying standards for 2026. These new times reflect the growing competitiveness of marathon running and the sport's immense popularity. While some age groups, particularly younger runners, have seen significant changes, the standards for older runners have remained largely unchanged. But what does this mean for the global marathon community, and how does Boston’s place in the marathon world fit within the broader spectrum of races?
The New Boston Qualifying Standards
AGE GROUP | MEN’S STANDARD | WOMEN’S STANDARD | NON-BINARY STANDARD |
18-34 | 2:55:00 | 3:25:00 | 3:25:00 |
35-39 | 3:00:00 | 3:30:00 | 3:30:00 |
40-44 | 3:05:00 | 3:35:00 | 3:35:00 |

50-54 | 3:20:00 | 3:50:00 | 3:50:00 |
55-59 | 3:30:00 | 4:00:00 | 4:00:00 |
60-64 | 3:50:00 | 4:20:00 | 4:20:00 |

70-74 | 4:20:00 | 4:50:00 | 4:50:00 |
75-79 | 4:35:00 | 5:05:00 | 5:05:00 |
80 and older | 4:50:00 | 5:20:00 | 5:20:00 |
The most notable changes to Boston’s qualifying times impact runners in the younger age groups, especially those in their 30s and 40s. For these runners, the time required to qualify has been reduced, making it even more challenging to secure a coveted spot in this iconic race. With more runners than ever vying for entry into Boston, the marathon has tightened its standards to maintain its prestige as a race for the world’s best amateur runners.
Interestingly, runners in the 60+ age groups have seen little to no changes in qualifying times. This decision suggests that the surge in marathon participation is largely driven by younger athletes, who are competing at faster paces than ever before. However, it’s important to note that qualifying standards for older runners are also shaped by age grading, a system that adjusts performances based on age to level the playing field. Explaining age grading is a topic in itself, but it essentially accounts for the natural decline in physical ability over time, allowing older runners to compete on a more equitable basis. This helps maintain fairness while acknowledging the differences in performance across age groups.
Why Boston’s Popularity Has Surged
The Boston Marathon holds a unique place in the running world. It’s one of the oldest marathons, steeped in history and prestige, and qualifying for Boston is a badge of honor. But this race is more than just a test of physical endurance—it’s a celebration of running culture, a symbol of achievement, and a dream for many.
With the rise in marathon popularity globally, Boston has become more competitive than ever. Running as a sport has grown tremendously, driven by factors like increased health consciousness, the thrill of competition, and the global appeal of destination marathons. Boston’s qualifying times are a reflection of that growth—an indication that more runners are chasing their marathon dreams, and they’re doing it faster than ever before.
Chasing the Dream—And Beyond
The new Boston qualifying times may seem daunting, but they also represent a unique opportunity. For many, the challenge of chasing a Boston qualifying time is a lifelong dream—an achievement that stands as the pinnacle of a runner’s journey. But even if Boston feels out of reach for now, these changes present a chance to reassess your goals, push your limits, and discover new horizons in your running career. Whether you're striving to qualify, looking to set a personal best, or simply eager to challenge yourself with a new experience, running offers an endless array of possibilities.
Unpopular Opinion - But There Are Other “Majors”
Regardless of whether you're aiming to run Boston for the first time, it's important to recognize that there are many other major marathons around the world worth pursuing. The Abbott World Marathon Majors, which include Boston, Berlin, Chicago, London, New York, and Tokyo, are often regarded as the most prestigious races globally. However, it's important to remember that Abbott is just one company that selected these races. There’s a whole world of marathons beyond these "Majors," with many incredible races in major cities around the world that are just as awe-inspiring. Imagine running in marathons like the Great Wall Marathon, Rome Marathon, or the Honolulu Marathon—each offering its own unique experience. For those seeking a fast course, the Valencia Marathon in Spain is perfect for a personal best. Each of these races provides runners with a once-in-a-lifetime experience, blending travel, culture, and the thrill of running. We've also made a YouTube video featuring some of these top destination marathons—be sure to check it out!
So, maybe Abbott needs some more competition? There’s already something similar with the SuperHalfs series (superhalfs.com), and who knows, there could be even more options in the future. The point is, while Abbott's series is iconic, it doesn't hold a monopoly on great races.
Conclusion: It’s More Than Just Boston
The changes to Boston’s qualifying times reflect the evolution of running and the sport’s immense growth. But as we chase Boston and the other World Marathon Majors, it's worth remembering that marathons in stunning places like China, Hawaii, and Spain offer equally memorable experiences. Running is about more than just one race—it’s about embracing the challenge, exploring the world, and discovering what you’re truly capable of.
In the end, while Boston may be the dream, it’s not the only dream worth pursuing.
