Motivation from Rose’s Olympic Journey

Last month, a 31 year old lawyer, Rose Harvey, was selected to represent Great Britain at the Olympics in the women's marathon. Five years ago, Rose was a full-time corporate lawyer providing legal advice on financial deals. In 2020, her employer lost a big chunk of business and Rose’s position was cut. With no job, Rose needed something to keep her busy during the COVID lockdown, so she threw herself into running.

2 years later, Rose went professional. Last year, she was the fastest British woman at the London marathon and recorded the fifth fastest-ever marathon time for a British woman at the Chicago Marathon (2:23:21). She is currently training in the Pyrenees, in preparation for her August 11 race on the relatively hilly Paris marathon course.

Whether or not you would like to run in the Olympics, here are 3 ways to use Rose’s journey as motivation:

Look for opportunities amidst change: When Rose lost her job during the COVID pandemic, it opened up her schedule, which created the opportunity for her to run more. This led to her trip to the Olympics. Similar to Rose, we can all benefit from looking for opportunities during change.

Atypical routes can lead to magnificent destinations: It is strange to think that the path to being an Olympic marathon runner would go through law school then work as a corporate attorney. That is the journey that Rose took. Similar to Rose, we are all presented with unique paths, many of which can take us to terrific destinations.

Do what you enjoy: Doing what you enjoy can lead to places beyond what you considered possible. Focusing on getting better everyday is a proven path to success and doing something that you enjoy makes is easier to do everyday. Similar to Rose, we can all benefit from doing what we enjoy.

Thank you to Rose for your inspiring journey to the Paris Olympics. Let’s have a great week!
