How to Navigate a Marathon Expo Like a Pro

Today’s newsletter is written by Letty, the host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel:

If you’re running a marathon, chances are you’ll be stopping by the marathon expo beforehand. Whether it’s a big-city race with thousands of runners or a smaller local event, expos are a key part of race weekend. But they’re not just about picking up your bib—they’re packed with gear, speakers, vendors, and pre-race excitement that can either help or hinder your marathon prep.

That’s why I put together this guide to navigating the expo without stress—plus, we cover even more in this week’s podcast episode! 🎙️

What to Expect at a Marathon Expo

Every expo is different, but most include:
✅ Bib Pickup & Race Essentials – Your first stop is usually grabbing your race bib, timing chip (if separate), and race packet. Be sure to double-check your bib info and chip before leaving!

✅ Gear & Apparel – Many vendors offer discounted running gear, new shoe releases, and race-branded merchandise. If you plan to buy something, make sure it’s gear you’ve already trained in—race weekend is not the time to try something new!

✅ Hydration & Nutrition Brands – If your race provides specific fuel at aid stations, it’s worth checking out their booth and trying it in training. But be cautious about sampling new gels or drinks too close to race day!

✅ Speaker Panels & Expert Advice – Many expos feature talks from elite runners, coaches, or sports nutritionists covering everything from race-day pacing to mental strategies. Check the schedule in advance so you don’t miss a great session.

✅ Physical Therapists & Injury Prevention – Some expos have PTs offering quick assessments, taping services, or injury prevention tips—a great resource if you’ve been dealing with any nagging aches.

✅ Fun Extras – Photo ops, meet-and-greets, charity booths, and giveaways—expos are a great place to soak in the excitement of race weekend.

How to Make the Most of the Expo Without Getting Overwhelmed

Marathon expos can be fun but exhausting, especially if they’re crowded. Here are some tips to keep your visit stress-free:

🔹 Go Early If Possible – The first day or early morning hours tend to be less crowded. If you prefer a relaxed experience, avoid the busiest times (usually the evening before race day).

🔹 Have a Plan – Check the expo map and vendor list beforehand. If there’s a specific brand or expert you want to see, plan your route so you don’t waste time wandering.

🔹 Set a Time Limit – Walking around for hours might seem fun, but it can leave your legs feeling tired before race day. Aim to be in and out within 60-90 minutes.

🔹 Stick to Your Budget – It’s tempting to buy everything from limited-edition race gear to the latest running gadgets, but try to set a spending limit so you don’t overspend.

🔹 Stay Hydrated & Rest Your Legs – Bring a reusable water bottle and take breaks if needed. Walking around a crowded convention hall is surprisingly tiring!

🔹 Don’t Try Anything New – Whether it’s a new gel, drink, or pair of shoes, race week is not the time for experimentation. Stick to what you know works.

🔹 Check for Last-Minute Race Updates – Some expos share important race-day details like weather changes, aid station info, or course adjustments. Make sure to check for any updates before you leave.

🔹 Pick Up Extra Safety Pins – Sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how often people forget or lose them! It’s always good to have extras for your bib.
