New Study Finds That Running Boosts Lifespan by 12 Years

A mere 75 minutes of weekly jogging or running can potentially add 12 years to your life, suggests a study in the International Journal of Environmental Research & Public Health. Focusing on telomeres linked to cellular health, the research found a notable 'biological age difference' favoring regular runners compared to those running less. While the study centered on cellular aging rather than mortality, it emphasized the positive impact of exercise on healthspan, advocating for a longer and healthier life.

A Response from The Rundown Community

“The marathon didn't become the 26.2 mile distance until the 1908 Olympics. The distance from Marathon to Athens is about 25 miles, depending on the route taken. Since no one knows the exact course of the hemidromos who ran back to Athens with news of the victory at Marathon (also, both the "rejoice we conquer" line followed by his death and his ID as Pheidippides are myths... Pheidippides is the hemidromos -- half day runner, they were trained to do much longer distances -- who ran 75 miles from Athens to Sparta and then back 75, trying to get help to fight Darius) it's hard to say exactly how far he ran that day. It was, however, arguably the biggest upset defeat of the ancient world. Just be glad someone didn't decide to make the distance race in the Olympics 75 miles!”

Marathon Runner Is Banned for 12 Months After Using a Car to Finish in Third Place

Joasia Zakrzewski had a friend pick her up along the course during the April 7 50-mile 2023 Manchester to Liverpool Ultras50 marathon on April 7. She later accepted a trophy for her third-place victory before recently being labeled a cheater.

The ride was discovered by tracking data that showed that Zakrzewski used a car to travel roughly 2.5 miles in the middle of the race. When confronted, the athlete admitted to officials that she had hitched a ride, but hadn’t initially copped to it because she was “embarrassed." She later tried to justify the cheating by explaining that her participation in the race was “non-competitive” in nature.
