Finding Your Perfect Running Shoes: A Comprehensive Guide

In partnership with

Today’s newsletter is written by Letty aka LettyRunz. She is the host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel.

With countless brands and models on the market, choosing the right running shoes can feel overwhelming. However, I've learned that understanding your specific needs and preferences can help you narrow down the options and find your perfect pair.

What to Look for in a Running Shoe

When it comes to selecting running shoes, comfort should always be your top priority. A well-fitting shoe should feel supportive and shouldn't cause any hotspots or discomfort. Beyond comfort, there are key features I always consider when choosing a pair:

  • Cushioning: This refers to the shoe's shock absorption. If you run on hard surfaces, well-cushioned shoes can help reduce the impact on your joints.

  • Stability: For those of us who tend to overpronate (rolling the feet inward excessively) or underpronate (not rolling inward enough), stability shoes can help correct these imbalances and prevent injury.

  • Drop: The difference in height between the heel and forefoot. A higher drop provides more heel cushioning, while a lower drop encourages a more natural running gait.

  • Weight: Lightweight shoes are perfect for speed, while heavier shoes offer more stability and support.

  • Terrain: If you’re hitting the trails, a trail-specific shoe offers better tread and protection. Road shoes, on the other hand, are lighter and built for smoother surfaces.

The Running Store Experience

I highly recommend visiting a running store to find your ideal shoes. The staff at specialty stores are often runners themselves, so they can provide invaluable advice. Plus, getting professionally measured ensures that you’re choosing the right fit, which is crucial. Even if they don’t carry every brand, their expertise can make a world of difference.

Here’s what I suggest looking for when you visit a running store:

  • Staff Expertise: Look for stores with knowledgeable staff who understand running mechanics.

  • Gait Analysis: Some stores offer professional gait analysis, which can really help in finding the perfect shoe.

  • Selection: A store with a variety of brands and models gives you more options.

  • Fit Testing: Make sure to try on several pairs and walk or run around the store to assess how they feel.

Building Your Running Shoe Rotation

In my experience, it’s not enough to have just one pair of running shoes. I always recommend a rotation of 3-4 pairs for different types of runs and longevity. Here's what my rotation looks like:

  • Daily Trainer: A solid daily trainer is essential for most of your runs, providing cushioning and support for easy runs or long distances.

  • Speed Shoe: This is what I use for faster tempos and intervals, designed for responsiveness.

  • Racing Shoe: For race day, a shoe with carbon plates can give you that extra performance boost.

  • Retired Racing Shoe: When I retire a racing shoe (which happens pretty fast these days), I still use it for fast long runs. This is something for you to consider too, if your long runs include a lot of marathon-pace miles!

Beyond the Basics

While those factors are key, don't forget to consider:

  • Running Surface: Do you primarily run on roads, trails, or tracks?

  • Goals: Are you aiming for a marathon, building speed, or simply maintaining fitness?

  • Personal Preferences: Some runners like minimalist shoes, while others prefer maximum cushioning. Go with what feels best for you.

Conclusion

Finding the perfect running shoe is a personal journey. By taking the time to understand your unique needs and goals, you can make the right choice. Remember, the best shoe is the one that feels comfortable, fits well, and supports your running style. So, take your time, test out different options, and build a rotation that works for you. Your feet—and your running performance—will thank you.
