5 Tips to use Running to Manage Stress

Today’s newsletter is written by Letty, host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel:

In today’s fast-paced world, stress is inevitable, but so is the opportunity to manage it effectively. Running is one of the simplest and most powerful tools for stress relief. It’s not just about the physical benefits—it’s the mental clarity, emotional release, and sense of balance that make running a sanctuary for many. Whether you’re tackling work deadlines, navigating personal challenges, or simply feeling overwhelmed, running can help you reset and recharge. Here are 5 ways to use running as a stress-management tool:

1. Treat Your Runs as 'Me Time'

Think of running as a sacred time carved out just for you. When life feels chaotic, a run can be your escape—a chance to step away from obligations and focus on yourself. No emails, no phone calls, no interruptions. This is your time to breathe, reflect, or simply exist in the moment. Some runners find solace in listening to calming music or nature sounds, while others prefer silence to let their thoughts flow. However you choose to spend your run, see it as an opportunity to prioritize your well-being.

2. Run at Your Own Pace

Stress often stems from feeling rushed or pressured, so don’t let those feelings carry over into your runs. Instead of chasing a specific pace or distance, allow yourself to run intuitively. Some days, a slow jog might feel just right; other days, a brisk walk could be what you need. By letting go of expectations, you’ll turn your run into a stress-free experience. Remember, it’s not about the numbers on your watch—it’s about how you feel during and after your run.

3. Use Nature to Your Advantage

Running outdoors adds an extra layer of stress relief. The sights, sounds, and smells of nature have a calming effect on the mind and body. Studies have shown that spending time in green spaces reduces stress hormones and boosts mood. Find a local trail, park, or even a quiet street lined with trees, and let the natural environment work its magic. The sunlight, fresh air, and open space can help you feel more grounded and connected. Even a short run in nature can significantly lighten your mental load.

4. Focus on Breathing and Mindfulness

One of the best ways to calm your mind during a run is to focus on your breathing. Stress often makes us breathe shallowly, which can worsen feelings of tension. As you run, practice deep, intentional breaths: inhale through your nose for a count of three, and exhale through your mouth for a count of four. Sync your breathing with your strides, creating a rhythm that feels meditative. For added mindfulness, tune into your senses. Notice the sound of your footsteps, the feel of the breeze on your skin, and the rhythm of your heartbeat. This practice can help you stay present and release lingering stress.

5. Choose the Right Level of Social Interaction

Stress affects everyone differently, so it’s important to consider what type of run will serve you best. If you’re feeling isolated, running with a friend or group can provide connection, support, and motivation. The camaraderie of shared miles often leads to uplifting conversations and laughs. On the flip side, if you’re feeling overstimulated and need quiet, a solo run might be your sanctuary. Listen to your instincts—whether you crave connection or solitude, the right run can help you reset and recharge.

Run Toward a Calmer, Happier You

Running is more than just a workout—it’s a form of active meditation and self-care. By making your runs intentional, tuning into your body, and finding the right environment, you can use running as a powerful tool to manage stress and boost your overall well-being.

Next time life feels overwhelming, lace up your shoes and hit the road, trail, or treadmill. You’ll return not only with a clearer mind but also with a stronger sense of balance.
