5 Tips for Giving Back to the Running Community
Today’s newsletter is written by Letty, host of the Marathon Running Podcast and YouTube Channel:
Running is more than just a sport—it’s a community. Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or a new runner, there are always ways to give back and make a positive impact. Helping others in the running world not only strengthens the community but also fosters connections that can make your own running journey more rewarding.
Here are five tips on how you can give back to the running community.
1. Volunteer at Local Races
One of the most direct ways to give back is by volunteering at local races. Races often need volunteers to help with registration, water stations, race timing, and course marshaling. Volunteering gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into organizing these events, and it’s a great way to support your fellow runners. Plus, you get to be a part of the excitement without running yourself!
2. Mentor a New Runner
If you’re an experienced runner, consider mentoring a beginner. Offer advice on training, running form, injury prevention, and gear. Sharing your knowledge and experience can be incredibly rewarding, and it helps others develop confidence and passion for running. Whether it’s through a formal program (like Girls on the Run) or just helping out a friend, mentoring is a great way to give back and inspire others to keep moving forward.
3. Donate Gear or Shoes
Many runners accumulate extra gear they no longer use, whether it's shoes, apparel, or accessories. Instead of letting them gather dust, consider donating your gently used gear to those in need. Local shelters, running organizations, or charities often appreciate donations of running shoes, clothes, or even race bibs for those who may not have access to such items. Giving your gear a second life can make a huge difference in someone’s running journey.
4. Support Running-Based Charities
There are numerous charities that benefit from running events. You can support these organizations by running in charity races or by fundraising for them. Many races partner with nonprofits, and you can combine your passion for running with a cause you care about. Fundraising for cancer research, mental health awareness, or other important issues helps raise both awareness and vital funds. Your participation can make a real impact on people’s lives.
5. Spread Positivity and Encouragement
Sometimes, giving back doesn’t require a big gesture. Simply spreading positivity and encouragement within your running community can go a long way. Cheer on other runners during training or races, offer a word of encouragement when you see someone struggling, or celebrate someone’s achievements—big or small. Positivity is contagious, and a little support can help someone push through their toughest runs.
Strengthen the Community by Giving Back
The running community thrives on support, encouragement, and connection. By volunteering, mentoring, donating, or simply offering a positive word, you can help strengthen this vibrant community and make it more inclusive for everyone. Giving back not only benefits others, but it also enriches your own running experience and brings a sense of fulfillment.
