Whether you're training for a race or just running for the love of it, finding the right people to run with can make all the difference. Running with others boosts motivation, provides support, and makes the miles fly by. But how do you find your ideal running buddy or group?
Here are 5 tips to help you connect with fellow runners and build a community (for more community building insights subscribe to Ian’s weekly BYC newsletter here).
One of the easiest ways to find a running group is to search for local running clubs in your area. Many cities have clubs that welcome runners of all abilities, from beginners to advanced. These clubs often offer group runs, training programs, and social events. Check your local community center, running stores, or social media for groups that fit your pace and goals. If you’re in Philadelphia, here are 22 run clubs to consider joining.
If you’re having trouble finding a group locally, technology has your back. Apps like Strava, Meetup, or Facebook groups can connect you with runners nearby or in your area. Join virtual running communities that host challenges, create events, and encourage runners to meet up. Whether you’re looking for someone to run with on the weekends or a full-fledged group, online platforms can help you find like-minded runners.
Sometimes, the people closest to you are the ones you least expect to be interested in running. Ask your friends or family members if they want to join you for a run. Even if they’re not seasoned runners, having a buddy to jog with on occasion can help you stay consistent. Plus, you’ll have built-in accountability and might even inspire them to make running a part of their routine.
Races, fun runs, and charity runs are perfect opportunities to meet other runners and potentially find your new training partners. At these events, you’ll encounter people with similar goals and a shared interest in running. Stick around after the race to chat, join post-race celebrations, or even ask about local running groups. These events foster a great sense of community and are a natural way to find running buddies.
If you’re someone who prefers running solo or doesn’t have many runners in your circle, virtual communities can be a great alternative. Many online platforms and apps (like Runna or Nike Run Club) offer virtual groups where you can participate in global challenges, share your progress, and get encouragement from others. Virtual groups are also perfect for runners who want flexibility but still enjoy the camaraderie and motivation that comes with group running.
Building a strong running community can take time, but once you find your group or running buddy, the support and camaraderie will make all the difference in staying motivated. Whether it's through local clubs, apps, or virtual platforms, connecting with others can transform your running experience.
