2025: THE YEAR IN REVIEW | Marathon & Half Marathon Running

🌍 Elite Global Rankings: The Speed of 2025

Half Marathon

The year was defined by Jacob Kiplimo (Uganda), who made history in February at the Barcelona Half Marathon. He became the first human to break the 57-minute barrier, setting a World Record of 56:42 (a blistering 4:20 per mile pace). Men’s Top 3: Jacob Kiplimo (56:42), Yomif Kejelcha (58:02), and Nicholas Kipkorir (58:23). Women’s Leader: Agnes Jebet Ng’etich topped the world rankings with a 1:03:08.

Full Marathon

Sabastian Kimaru Sawe (Kenya) emerged as the world’s most dominant marathoner, claiming the #1 spot in the World Athletics rankings. Men’s Standouts: Sawe clocked the year's fastest time of 2:02:16 in Berlin. He was followed closely by Jacob Kiplimo (2:02:23 in Chicago) and John Korir (2:02:24 in Valencia). Women’s Standouts: Joyciline Jepkosgei (Kenya) led the world with a 2:14:00 in Valencia. Other top-ranked athletes included Tigst Assefa, Peres Jepchirchir (2:14:43), and Hawi Feysa (2:14:56).
