A Message from the World of Running
We sat down with Clark Gardner, CEO and Race Director of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, for an electrifying discussion on Africa's push for the World Marathon Majors (WMM). Gardner’s mission is clear: to give the elite runners from this continent, who are the fastest in the world, the Major event they deserve right here at home.

1. The World Major Verdict: A 2026 Shift
The journey to become the 8th Major comes down to one event: the October 19th race. This will be the third and final evaluation by the WMM, and if successful, the race will be officially announced as a Major for 2026.
The Game Changer: May 2026
Clark Gardner confirmed that the race will permanently shift from its traditional fall timing. The inaugural Major will take place in May 2026—a date chosen for its optimal autumn weather (low wind, mild temperatures) to ensure the fastest possible course for both elites and PBs. This move strategically positions Cape Town as the perfect spring-summer Major to pair with Tokyo, Boston, and London, making it easier than ever for Nine Star Medal Chasers to complete the globe.
Final Evaluation: October 19th
Announcement: Expected November 2025
First Major: May 2026
2. Your South Africa Travel Blueprint
Thinking of making the trip? This race is more than a medal; it's a destination. Gardner addresses common concerns and gives his top tips for the safest, most rewarding trip:
The Race Experience
The Course: It’s famous for being flat and fast with just under 200m of elevation. You are guaranteed a visual of the iconic Table Mountain almost the entire way.
The Community: Prepare for a running experience filled with an infectious, high-energy African spirit. The local running clubs sing, chant, and celebrate every runner, making for a truly unique atmosphere.
The Travel Essentials
Safety & Logistics: Cape Town is internationally recognized as a beautiful, safe city. For ease and peace of mind, consider booking through one of our international tour operators, who will manage everything from safe transport to accommodation near the central V&A Waterfront precinct.
Must-Do’s on a 7-Day Trip:
Hike Table Mountain the day after the race (it’s a marathon runner tradition!).
Tour the Winelands (Stellenbosch or Constantia).
Take a quick two-night flight-in safari to a reputable game reserve.
Visit Robben Island to connect with the nation's history.

You know the marathon in my country is just exceptional. It's like soccer in England. If England win the world cup and Ethiopia win the marathon - it's the same.
